Exchange Programs with Partner Universities

As of September 2023, Hirosaki University has 9 universities andInter-university exchange agreementis tiedUniversities that have signed agreements have mutual agreements to waive tuition fees, so there is the great advantage of being able to study abroad without paying tuition fees.

However, currently, it is not possible to study abroad at all partner universities without paying tuition fees.There is a limit to the number of students who will not be charged tuition fees.

About regular classes and university-affiliated language centers
In order to study abroad at a partner university and take regular classes, a certain level of language skills and grades are required.Those who do not meet that standard will enter a language center to study the language.At the end of the semester at the Language Center, if you meet the required level of language proficiency, you can take regular classes thereafter. (However, with regards to non-collection of tuition fees at partner universities, most universities are only eligible for regular classes, and in the case of language centers, tuition fees are often charged.)

1. Qualifications

1. Persons enrolled in a regular undergraduate or graduate school course at our university.
   *Fourth-year undergraduate and graduate students applying are limited to those who will maintain their status as a student at our university and continue their studies at our university for one semester or more even after the dispatch ends.
   *International students are not allowed to apply to partner universities located in their home countries.
2. Those who return to the university immediately after the dispatch period ends and continue their studies.
3. Those who are excellent in both academics and personality, and have the language ability etc. specified by the partner school and our university.
4. Those who have a clear purpose and plan for studying abroad and who can contribute to exchanges between our university and partner schools.
5. Persons who have obtained consent from their parents and supervisors.

Listed are universities that have dispatched students.There are other study abroad destinations, so please inquire at the International Relations Office Support Office for details.

For those who wish to study abroad,TOEFL-ITPplease receiveAt universities in English-speaking countries, you cannot take regular classes unless you have obtained the scores required by the other university.Even at partner universities outside of the English-speaking world, there are many places where classes are taught in English, so it is better to take them.

4. Status at our university while studying abroad

You can study abroad while taking a “leave of absence” from our university, or you can study abroad as “enrolled” without taking a leave of absence.
Since there are differences as follows, please be sure to consult with your parents, academic advisors, and academic affairs (academic affairs) staff to determine your status at this university while studying abroad.

〇If you take a leave of absence to study abroad
There is no need to pay tuition fees to Hirosaki University.However, graduation will be delayed by six months or one year.

〇If you study abroad while still in school
You are required to pay tuition fees to Hirosaki University even while studying abroad.
The period of study abroad is included in the number of years required for graduation, so it is possible to earn as many credits as possible during the first or second year, study abroad, and graduate in four years.
Depending on the department, this may not be possible, so please be sure to consult with your academic advisor and each department's academic affairs department before making a decision.
*If you are taking a leave of absence, you must submit a “Leave of Absence Notification” to the academic affairs (academic affairs) section of each faculty.

If you start studying abroad from January to April ⇒Early July of the previous year 

If you start studying abroad from July to October ⇒ Late December of the previous year or late January of the same year

7. Credit recognition after returning to Japan

・Courses acquired while studying abroad will be transferred to the courses and credits offered at our university, up to a maximum of 60 credits, and will be recognized after discussion by the faculty committee of each faculty.

・If you wish to have your credits recognized, you will need to bring your academic transcript, syllabus, class schedule, grade policy, textbooks, submitted papers, reports, and other documents that can be used as a reference for credit recognition when you return to your home country.

・If a “syllabus” has not been created, please obtain a certificate that outlines the course, etc.

・After returning to your home country, please consult with the academic affairs (academic affairs) staff of each faculty regarding credit approval, and follow their instructions. However, before departure, please fully consult with the academic affairs (academic affairs) representative of each faculty, your academic advisor, and the faculty member in charge of classes regarding the conditions for advancing to the next year and the credits required for graduation.

〇Students receiving Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) scholarships, those applying for or planning to apply for tuition fee exemption, please consult with the person in charge before studying abroad.
