Chihiro Takahashi, 3rd year student, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

Hi everyone, I'm Chihiro Takahashi, currently studying abroad at Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand! I'd like to share what I've done and what I've experienced over the past five months!

Before I came to study abroad, I had absolutely no idea what Auckland was like, except that I'd heard it was a "multicultural city." But now, after spending four months here, I realize that's absolutely true! People from Asia, the West, and island nations all live together. That's what makes Auckland unique, and it's what I love about it.

Next, let's talk about university classes! In Semester 1, I took four English classes. I had classes four days a week for three hours each, with about 15 students of various ages and nationalities. The teachers and students were all very kind, so they answered my questions right away!

Next, I'd like to talk about other university activities. I was also interested in the Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand! At this university, there was a time every day during lunch break when students volunteered to teach about the Maori. Thanks to participating in that, I learned the Maori language and had dinner with Maori students. They are wonderful people who always welcome you! I also joined a dance club and performed in a showcase with my team members at the end of the semester. Practicing with my friends helped me improve my English, but more than that, I'm happy that I was able to create fun and wonderful memories. What both have in common is that everyone is very warm-hearted, kind, and friendly. Because of the multicultural environment, they are happy to accept my imperfect English.

Even though it's a study abroad experience, the vast majority of time is spent outside of classes, so I realized how important it is to not be afraid of new environments and to keep trying new things! I also want to continue participating in various events and cherish the encounters I have.
