This program was implemented as part of Hirosaki University's 80th anniversary celebrations, with the aim of broadening students' international perspectives through participation in international alumni associations and interaction with university graduates and local students active overseas. Seven students from our university participated in this program.
Before departing, as part of our pre-departure preparations, we learned about Korean culture and manners from students studying abroad from Korea. We learned useful knowledge for interacting with locals, such as greetings, dining etiquette, and basic Korean phrases, which heightened our excitement for the trip.
Pre-learning process
After preliminary preparations, the students traveled to South Korea on August 20th and stayed in a student dormitory at Gyeonggi University. From the 21st, they met with student tutors from Gyeonggi University and toured tourist and cultural sites such as Gyeongbokgung Palace. They enjoyed interacting with local students, gaining a firsthand experience of Korean culture and university life, and deepening their understanding of a different culture.

On Saturday, August 22nd, the 3rd Hirosaki University International Alumni Association meeting was held at the Gyeonggi University campus. This event brings together current students, former international students, students planning to study abroad, faculty and staff, and anyone with ties to Hirosaki University, providing an opportunity to deepen connections through reunions and new interactions.

Students who participated in the exchange program also took part in the operation of the alumni association, assisting with registration, venue guidance, and event management. Through assisting participants and managing the venue, they had the opportunity to interact directly with graduates working overseas and local people, gaining experience in international exchange from the perspective of those involved in organizing the event.
On the day of the event, students used slides they had created to introduce Hirosaki University, sharing information about the university's appeal and current initiatives.
Additionally, the annual rock-paper-scissors tournament was held, creating a lively atmosphere and filling the venue with smiles and cheers.
Towards the end of the event, Ms. Mounai (2nd year, Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences) and Ms. Kimura (2nd year, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences), both members of the Hirosaki University Tsugaru Shamisen Club, performed a Tsugaru shamisen piece. Participants enjoyed the powerful and impressive performance, taking photos and videos and listening attentively, fully appreciating the charm of the Tsugaru shamisen.
At the venue, there were many instances of former international students happily reuniting with each other after a long time, and new connections being formed, expanding the circle of exchange that transcends generations and national borders.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who participated and everyone who helped with the operation of the event.
The next Hirosaki University International Alumni Association meeting is scheduled to be held in Taiwan. We look forward to your participation!
